Cats Spraying in the House

Cats of both sexes will spray urine in the house if they feel threatened by others to mark their territory. Entire male cats have pungent urine and use it on vertical surfaces to advertise their presence. It can be difficult to stop male cats spraying if they have not been castrated before they have reached maturity.

If you have several cats at home it is important to let them have their own space so that they can each have a part of the house that they feel secure in.
Neutered males may spray if they have any contact with a Queen who is in season. They get the hormonal clues that something is going on and react accordingly.

Spraying tends to occur in certain places in the house. Set the diffuser up in this area or use Feliway Spray each day on vertical surfaces. When spraying occurs wipe it up with water and detergent, try not to use a strong disinfectant. This has a tendency to mask the smell and will overwhelm the affects of the pheromones.

Biological products such as Odour Eliminator are useful as they digest the proteins that is responsible for the smell and take away the olfactory clues that this is a place to spray over.

If all goes well after a time your cat will rub his chin on the surfaces that he has been urine marking. When this happens stop using the Odour Eliminator but keep the Diffuser running to prevent a relapse of the undesirable behavior.
