Destructive Behavior |

If you are
having problems leaving your dog home alone try to restrict him to the room
where he sleeps and try not to leave him for any length of time until you
have been using the diffuser for a week or more. If you can try to organize
things so that he will not be able to anticipate when you will come back. Take him for a long walk so that he can have a good run off the lead or take
part in a favorite game. Let him know that he is pleasing you. Get your dog used to being in a room on his own, perhaps leave a radio on so
that there is some background noise. Shut the door and do something quietly
in a nearby room. Do not react if he does not settle try to ignore his
protests. After a while, if he has been quiet go back in and make a big fuss
of him. The idea is to get your dog used to the idea that sometimes he will
be left on his own. The first time that you leave him alone in the house try to make it for just a few minutes. Again greet him enthusiastically, but try to ignore any boisterous or destructive behavior. He will not understand punishment unless to are there when he has misbehaved. After a while you should be able to leave him for longer and longer. It is better if he cannot anticipate how long you will be a way as he might become distressed if you fail to return at our usual time. |
