Pheromones Helping New Pups Destructive Behavior Fear of Fireworks
Cats Spraying in the House Calming Kittens What the Vet Says Home

Pheromones are substances secreted by animals that can influence the behavior of other animals. They work in a similar way to the hormones that circulate in the blood stream except that they operate over longer distances as they get into the air.

It has been known for a long time that Bitches produce powerful pheromones from glands on their abdomen that has a calming effect on their growing puppies. Cats produce similar substances from a gland under their chin. It is known that animals of all ages can be influenced by these compounds.

Pheromones can now be manufactured artificially and can be used to help dogs and cats that are worried by stressful situations.

The drugs that we use at our surgery are available  either in the form of a diffuser that plugs into an electrical socket and releases the compounds into a room for dogs and cats. The cat compound is also available in a spray form. Pheromones are also used to help in the management of some farm animals.
